A Different Way of Understanding Growth

Jaw Functional Orthopedics (JFO) is a specialized branch of Functional Dentofacial Orthopedics that focuses on the relationship between function, growth, and craniofacial development.

Rather than concentrating solely on tooth position, JFO investigates how breathing, chewing, swallowing, posture, sensory integration, and mandibular dynamics influence facial growth and development.

This biological and functional approach aims to restore physiological growth stimuli, support harmonious craniofacial development, and create long-term stability through early intervention.

Why Is Functional Dentofacial Orthopedics Relevant Today?

Modern dentistry is increasingly recognizing that craniofacial development cannot be understood through teeth alone.

Functional Dentofacial Orthopedics focuses on the entire stomatognathic system — including breathing, mastication, swallowing, posture, and mandibular function — to guide growth in a physiological and developmentally appropriate way.

As research continues to highlight the connections between oral function, airway health, posture, and craniofacial development, clinicians are seeking approaches that address underlying functional causes rather than only structural consequences.

This Course Is Designed For

  • Orthodontists seeking a deeper understanding of functional diagnosis and growth-guided treatment
  • Orthodontic Residents interested in early intervention and functional dentofacial orthopedics
  • Pediatric Dentists involved in the prevention and interception of malocclusions
  • Pediatric Dentistry Residents developing expertise in craniofacial growth and development
  • General Dentists interested in growth, development, and functional approaches to patient care

THE WILMA SIMÕES SCHOOL

Prof. Dr. Wilma Alexandre Simões is considered one of the most influential pioneers of modern Jaw Functional Orthopedics.

Her work transformed the understanding of how functional stimuli influence craniofacial growth and led to the development of the internationally recognized Simões Network Appliances (SNs).

Today, her concepts continue to inspire clinicians worldwide who seek a deeper understanding of growth, function, and the biological foundations of orthodontic treatment.

This course offers a rare opportunity to learn these principles through one of the leading educators connected to the Simões tradition.

Prof. Dr. Patrícia Valério

(Brazil)

Prof. Dr. Patrícia Valério is an internationally recognized educator, researcher, and clinician in Jaw Functional Orthopedics with more than 30 years of clinical and academic experience.

A direct representative of the Brazilian tradition of Functional Jaw Orthopedics, she has dedicated her career to teaching the principles of growth-guided treatment, neuro-occlusal rehabilitation, and functional diagnosis.

As co-author of Ortopedia Funcional dos Maxilares alongside Prof. Dr. Wilma Alexandre Simões and Danilo Duarte, she continues the educational legacy of one of the most influential schools in Functional Jaw Orthopedics.

She has lectured internationally and trained clinicians throughout Europe, Latin America, and beyond.

Join an exclusive international educational experience and discover how function guides growth.

It is about helping clinicians understand earlier and work together better.
Patients do not develop in isolated specialties.
Breathing, facial growth, oral function, posture, sleep, adaptation and compensation are often interconnected.
Yet in daily clinical practice, they are frequently observed separately.
This experience creates space for a more connected clinical conversation.
